Evidence-Based Programs

Evidence-based programs use specific, rigorously evaluated models to help families achieve a variety of goals – from improved birth outcomes for babies to self-sufficiency for parents. The key is that the data can show us whether what our hearts tell us to do for a family is really leading to the prescribed end result. If a program is evidence-based and works in Peoria, it will work in Palm Beach County. And it will help families achieve better outcomes and provide significant return on investment for the community.

Still confused about evidence-based programs?

Here are some answers:

  • Research-based: An evidence-based program uses an already-established set of services or activities that have proven to be effective based on research.

  • Return on investment: An evidence-based program ensures that the cost of implementing the program is offset by achievable, long-term results. The advantage to both funders and providers is that evidence-based programs eliminate costly trial-and-error methods. In short, they provide the best return on investment.

  • Creating criteria: There are many organizations that now have procedures for measuring whether programs are evidence based. Some examples include: The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention; SAMHSA’s National Registry of Effective Programs and Practices; What Works Clearinghouse; Office of the Surgeon General; and Child Welfare League of America.
